For Intrastate (GIMC)
Who is required to register under the Georgia Intrastate Motor Carrier (GIMC) Registration Program effective July 1, 2015?
- “Motor Carriers” (O.C.G.A. § 40-2-1) operating “Commercial Motor Vehicles” (O.C.G.A. § 40-1-1) in intrastate commerce.
A “Commercial Motor Vehicle” is a vehicle used in the furtherance of a commercial enterprise that:
- Has a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR), Gross Combination Weight Rating (GCWR), Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW), or Gross Combination Weight (GCW) of 4,537 kg (10,001 lbs.) or more; OR
- Is designed or used to transport more than ten (10) passengers, including the driver; OR
- Is used to transport material determined to be hazardous by the secretary of the United States Department of Transportation under 49 U.S.C. Section 5103 and transported in a quantity that requires placards under regulations prescribed under 49 C.F.R., Subtitle B, Chapter I, Subchapter C.
Who is exempt from the Georgia Intrastate Motor Carrier (GIMC) Registration Program?

Covered Farm Vehicle - is operated by a farm/ranch owner or operator, or an employee or a family member of the farmer or rancher; Transports agricultural commodities,
livestock or machinery or supplies to and from a farm or ranch; Is NOT operated for-hire (hauling for others for compensation); Are NOT transporting hazardous materials in
quantities requiring the display of hazardous material warning placards.

Interstate Carrier -Carrier registered under the Unified Carrier registration

All school bus operations as defined in 49 CR §390.5

Transportation performed by Federal government, a State, or any political subdivision of a State, or an agency established under a compact between States that has
been approved by the Congress of the United States;

The occasional transportation of personal property by individuals not for compensation nor in the furtherance of a commercial enterprise;

The transportation of human corpses or the emergency transportation of sick and injured persons;

The operation of fire trucks and rescue vehicles involved in emergency and related operations;

Volunteer charitable organizations

Instructions for Georgia Intrastate Motor Carrier (GIMC)
Applications for GIMC must include the following required documentation:
- Completed Georgia Intrastate Motor Carrier (GIMC) Application; and
- Form E: Required by For Hire only. Issued to applicant by insurance provider. Have your insurance company (not your agent) file evidence of public liability and property damage insurance; (Note: The information on your application and Form E must concur); and,
- Completed, signed and notarized Georgia Security and Immigration Act (GSICA) Affidavit as required by OCGA § 50-36-1); and,
- Copy of the front and back of a “Secure and Verifiable Document,” as required by O.C.G.A. § 50-36-2; and,
- Proof (diploma, certificate, etc.) that the applicant has completed, within the preceding 12 months, an educational seminar on motor carrier operations and safety regulations authorized by the Commissioner of Public Safety.
- Payment by one of the following methods: Credit card, money order, Certified Bank check
GIMC registrations are not active until ALL required documentation is received and all fees paid.
Applicants are encouraged to apply online at the Georgia Department of Public Safety website. However, once you have completed your online application and have paid all fees, the additional required documentation described above must be submitted by U.S. Mail to the Georgia Department of Public Safety, UCR-GIMC Section, P.O. Box 1456, Atlanta, Georgia 30371-1456, OR by email to ucr.gimc@gsp.net, OR by Fax to 404-624-7248.
